Understanding Health

Read Food Lable (Understanding Health)

This may confuse you, but if you look closely at the bottom of a label, you will find the %Daily Values are based on a 2,000 calorie diet. Neeraj Mehta, fitness expert and nutritionist, tells us, “Your daily values may be higher or lower depending on your calorie needs. %Daily Value is a standard set by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which every food product manufacturer has to follow. The nutrient values that are listed are according to this standard.”

Calories
Calories provide a measure of how much energy you get from a serving of food. The calorie section of the label can help you manage your weight. Mansi explains, “40 calories is low, 100 calories is moderate and 400 calories or more is high.”

Light
A food product that has the word light in its name could mean various things. Neeraj explains, “Light could suggest a nutritionally-altered food product, which contains half the fat or one third lesser calories. It could also mean that the sodium content of a low-calorie or low-fat food has been reduced by half. Sometimes, it also describes food properties such as texture and colour.”
